All Arab countries agree to attend Baghdad summit

15/02/2012

CAIRO, Feb.15 (AKnews) - All Arab countries have given the green light for attending the Arab summit in Baghdad.

Iraqi representative in the Arab League ambassador Qais al-Azzawi said there is an "Arab consensus about holding [the summit] in Baghdad to allow the return of Iraq to its natural place at the forefront of Arab and international nations".

He continued to add that the absence of Iraq put the Arab League in an "unbalanced condition" in previous years.

Arab foreign ministers decided to postpone the summit, which was scheduled to be held in January, until March because of the events of the Arab spring in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and other Arab countries.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is set to visit Kuwait ahead of the summit in a bid to resolve issues that continue to linger from Iraq's 1990 invasion of the emirate. The Iraqi government wishes to settle its issues with Kuwait through the implementation of investment projects for Kuwaiti companies in Iraq.

Iraq is due to chair the Arab-South America summit to be held in Peru in next year.
